Percival, the wild rabbet living in our backyard was sighted again yesterday.  I suspect that he/she is finding shelter under our deck.  Does the young animal “know” there are fewer predators in our yard than just 50 yards away in Almond Marsh?  Maybe.  Was reminded of a line from Bergson in yesterday’s post that “in instinct there survives a gleam of intelligence.”  Instinct, of which we humans have very little left, is similar in purpose to intelligence.  I assume that instinct is all that the rabbet has to keep itself safe.  In any case I was happy to see Percival.  Rabbets are almost helpless to escape any larger carnivore predator.

We were seated at Taqueria El Sazon, one of our restaurants of choice in Batavia, when Laura remembered that Sept 13 was our anniversary.  We’ve been married 49 years.  Both of us were delighted at the thought that we’ve journeyed so far and so long together.  From today’s vantage point we were innocent children when in our early 20’s we decided to make common cause together to live this life with all of the idealism that we had in our hearts at the time.  We remain idealists but not in the same way.  Life is a stern teacher, as is any teacher with a lesson worth paying for.  We reminisced and had a wonderful meal of enchiladas.

Fall is approaching.  The rhythm of the seasons remind us that we are of the earth.  Who is not seduced by the beauty of the turning leaves, the orange of a pumpkin,  — and does not preparation for the winter months give us something to do?  Photo is of a tiny maple leaf.
