Plague Journal, Texture of Summer
Today is June 1st. June is the month of summer. Summer arrives in few days. Summer is prime time for plants, animals and all living things. Growth is at maximum velocity over the arc of June and the following two months. In the northern hemisphere, the tilt of the earth’s axis places us closer to the sun, than at any other time of year. Light is life. More light, means more life.
Nevertheless, it is a matter of balance, just the right amount of light, and water, and nourishment from the soil. Luck is never to be discounted. It is not as if everything, all is a great machine, subject to a hidden (but real) logic. Luck, blind, stupid, luck always plays a hand. Life can prematurely end with drought, with a day or two of deluge, or with an accidental human act… This hard reality is the rationale for all religion. There are circumstances when prayer is all that one can do. There’s no reason at all here. We are merely human.
Over the weekend, family members gathered for a cookout. I captured these photos. One of our most fundamental, primary acts is that of eating is it not? Color, texture, and flavor are to be celebrated.
