Plague Journal, Gibbering On
I moved. Today at breakfast I moved as far as possible from the droning of Good Morning America television, a mindless going on about how the quiz show Jeopardy. The show now will have two hosts… Who in his/her right mind should care? Clearly inhabitants of our media culture do care. The world is burning! And we are the fire-starters! Stay tuned! There’s more to come!
Three quotations for your thoughts:
Not the person who denies the gods worshiped by the multitude, but he who affirms of the gods what the multitudes believe about them — is truly impious. — Epicurus, Letter to Menoeceus
Natural justice is a symbol or expression of usefulness, to prevent one person from harming or being harmed by another.
There never was an absolute justice, but only an agreement made in reciprocal association…providing against the infliction or suffering of harm.
Justice is something useful in mutual association. — anonymous
America is a hotel nation, preoccupied with convenience and superficiality. As long as the lights are on 24×7 there is no need to address the underside of human existence. We are addicted to stimulation, titillation, shallow pleasures, and have discarded the search for depth. — Cornel West
A final thought: We Americans are an effete people, accustomed to luxury by comparison to the majority of humanity. Yours truly, as an old white guy is within the circle of this indictment. There is no agreement about “justice” in this society, — which should come as no surprise for a hotel nation. This is a society of “haves” and “have-nots” particularly if you happen to be a person of color. Rome never pretended “justice for all.” We on the other hand, seduced by glitz and the excited voice of the shill, believe that we, live in the greatest and best nation on earth.
