Same Old Song
Dust in the Wind
By Kansas
I close my eyes
Only for a moment, and the moment’s gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind
Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Now don’t hang on
Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won’t another minute buy
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
(All we are is dust in the wind)
Dust in the wind
(Everything is dust in the wind)
Everything is dust in the wind
(In the wind)
Lyrics by Kerry Livgren
Why so negative? You continue to concentrate on the dark side, to insist the reader attend to “the passing,” Why yes! How exciting that you’ve grasped my point of view. It is a point of view in any case. There’s no requirement that you ponder this sense of things. You may resume the virtual reality video game at any time.
Actually the message is unequivocally positive. The earth and the sky endure. They last forever, and to be human is to be “of the earth.” Human = humus. Human Beings live between earth and sky.
Given that my personality, the identity shaped by a myriad of experiences, by relations with others painful and pleasant, — has a limited duration. I have an expiration date just as I had a birth-date. (Each requires the other does it not?) Yet, action is not nothing. The result, the effect will be added to the repository of the earth, the destination of every past generation, and the source of all future generations.
Everyone makes a difference, everyone now living, or who ever has lived, for that matter — contributes to shaping the future.
You matter.
Close your eyes. Can you hear the rhythm? It is an old song.
