Promising What I Do Not have
To love
is to give what you do not have
to someone
who does not exist.
-Jacques Lacan, Seminar VIII
Today I “decided” to dedicate time to revisit the ideas of Jacques Lacan (1901-1981). Lacan was a psychoanalyst practicing according to the insight offered by Freudian philosophy which treated the unconscious. Lacan was interested in what we do when we embark on a voyage upon an unknown sea, the sea of love. To love is to make a promise which we cannot keep, an utterance performative of fidelity, something unnatural, something which I dare not assume.
Simultaneously I am intrigued and frightened by what Lacan suggests.
This tune, voice, and lyric is a bullseye, to the Lacanian point.
