Not Standing Around
I do not enjoy thinking about, or writing about politics. I recognize that politics is a dimension of life. Yet we live in terrible times, by comparison to the time of my childhood and early adult years. In that time, with the exception of the Vietnam War years, politics was not a daily intrusion, a rolling scene of conflict, and destruction. What happens in Washington and Springfield impacts towns and neighborhoods. Violence spills over.
I offer a quote that was magnificently articulated by Cynthia Nixon at the Tony Awards for her role in Lillian Hellman’s “Little Foxes”.
There are people who eat the earth and eat all the people on it……. Then there are people who stand around and watch them eat it.
–Lillian Hellman, Playwright, August 6 1906 – June 6, 1986
Nixon added, “My love, my gratitude and my undying respect go out to all the people in 2017 who are refusing to just stand and watch them do it.”
Nature is often a bright image in a dark time. These photo’s were taken at Kraklauer Creek yesterday.
