About Beauty

About Beauty

Just finished reading an essay, Attuned to the Aesthetic by Tom Cochrane. The author proposed, suggested that beauty is a ground for morality. I did enjoy the essay, not simply because I also endorse his thesis, but because the seven pages were beautifully written, a smooth read.

Could we say that to be involved with beautiful objects, to have one’s “antennae out,”  to welcome the surprise of beauty is what qualifies us to be called an aesthetician?

It is a Monday. In contrast to my usual longish posts, I’ll conclude by recommending this tune by Styx.  The Grand Illusion 1976.  Beauty is immersive, as if we hear our name called, an invitation to enter into the drama before us. Sometimes beauty is simply, and only beauty. But at times, the beautiful also shows the truth about our situation.
