There Is No Why
Sutherland Springs, Texas, First Baptist Church, Devin Patrick Kelley, 15 magazines of AR-15 ammo, 15 rounds per mag, emptied into the congregation. Twenty six people are killed. Kelley is dead.
I read these “facts” and more on the CNN website. The bottomless analysis of the event continues. Everyone who has an opinion weighs in, from the Governor of Texas, the Air Force, to the barely literate citizen who opines when encountered at the local mini mart. On and on.
The CNN website has these ads running down the side of the page: Wal-marts grocery pickup is here, Bankrate-online savings accounts earns you $1,000s, Trulia-getting ready to sell-find out what your home is worth now, and bad tattoo decisions that will make you laugh etc. Ad nauseam. Pun intended.
When life is poisoned with falsity and unreality we have no way of recover our authentic subjectivity. We try by arming ourselves to the teeth. And then in the most extreme case, we may stage our own Ragnarok, a personal paroxysm of rage. It does not matter where; a concert venue in Las Vegas, or a small country church in rural Texas. A final, grand, nihilistic gesture…..
There is no why. The AR in his hands screams its lethal song.
