Values Are Aims
Life is a matter of values. The thrust of one’s life is a matter of one’s aims. Purposes which one has chosen together, constitute the meaning of an individual’s life. Each has the opportunity to choose, to endorse the path that he or she takes. A few of the options offered by our post-industrial, globalized milieu are: denigration of people of color, the unqualified ownership of weapons, unlimited desire to amass wealth, unlimited quest for political power, or the cultivation of kindness, meaning and beauty. Values become real through the exercise of choices, through practice. We come to know by doing, by practice. You create your world. Nothing has to be as it is. Your choice. It’s up to you. Hard times are coming.
….the profit motive is often in conflict with the aims of art. We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable–but then, so did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the art of words. –Ursula K. Le Guin, 1928-2018 RIP
