That’s The Law
I am a native born North Carolinian. I’ve lived in Illinois for over forty years. When asked by anyone if I miss my home state, my answer usually is, “Its a good place to be from.” I grew up in North Carolina, and have fond memories of my teachers, of the pine tree forests in the woods where I played and hunted as a teenager. I miss the kindness of Southern hospitality. I remember when the state was well regarded as a place of progressive education: public schools, Duke University in my hometown of Durham, UNC State at Raleigh, and Carolina at Chapel Hill. That was many years ago and much has changed.
Scanning the front page of the New York Times on Sunday morning I read this article. I felt nausea, shame at being from the State of North Carolina. I felt like throwing up.
I feel empathy for any citizen who unwittingly, innocently violates the law, and falls into the hands of an authority figure who has no concept of mercy. These public officials, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, –are the modern day descendants of the Javert character in Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables story.
