Photo Stories
Thinking of Frank Styburski’s photos, some of his images remain in my memory. There is a surplus of images around us. We are inundated. Over-stimulated our attention is fleeting and little of any of it is remembered.
The Styburski photos by contrast show the underlying forms of Nature, and of the interface between civilization as we know it and Nature. Nature is what we are made of. We are nothing but Nature, even as our
culture which is a human creation– celebrates and often deforms, takes hostage, and kills Nature. The human-Nature relationship is complex, and often contradictory.
The Thanksgiving season prompts me to think about Nature.
When I was a teenager I’d carry my 22 rifle for long walks in the woods, as the trees would lose their foliage. Under the stark bare trees, everything stripped to its essential form in the cold air, I would walk in silence, happy. I don’t do that anymore. Just yesterday I picked up my old Daisy BB gun. With a empty pop can and an old paper coffee cup, I remembered the kid who went for long walks at this time of year in the woods. Target practice.
I offer some of my own photos taken recently.
Enjoy.
