A Sad Song
If you love music, you already know that when you feel down, a sad song is just the medicine, the relief that you need. This one by the Eagles, brings back memories. The more miles that one has under one’s belt, the more clear the truth conveyed by the lyric.
Old Heraclitus came to mind. Heraclitus of Ephesus was a pre-Socratic philosopher. Beginnings are unspeakably important, portending the entire trajectory of a life, or of a people. Heraclitus surviving fragments are a meditation upon change. Philosophy as an academic discipline has been a exploration of successive generation’s thinking about change. As a personal discipline, philosophy has been a life-long meditation about my experience of change from the mid 20th century into the early 21st century. “Panta Rhei,” everything changes, said Heraclitus. A more certain, concise poetic truth about reality has never since been uttered.
This song by the Eagles brought to mind the hours that I spent in a long gone coffee shop in Tokyo. It was called the Moon-Gate Coffee Shop, or Fugetsudo in Japanese. You just had to mention the name and any Japanese college student would know the place in Shinjuku. It was a hang out for students, for would-be students still trying to pass the tough college entrance exam, and for ex-pats like myself living in Tokyo. It was a place for meeting interesting people, people willing to entertain radical ideas, during the time of the Vietnam War. A life-sized, black sculpture of a female nude on a pedestal dominated the floor of the seating area. The place was not especially clean, the coffee was terrible and expensive, and I loved the hours spent there studying, practicing Japanese and soaking up the atmosphere. It was a holy place.
The tune says it better than I. I like the semi-religious references, “…and wonder at the powers that be.” The haunting song illuminates the incandescence of life.
The Sad Cafe
Out in the shiny night, the rain
was softly falling
The tracks that ran down the boulevard had
all been washed awayOut of the silver light, the past came softly calling
And I remember the times we spent
inside the Sad CafeOh, it seemed like a holy place,
protected by amazing grace
And we would sing right out loud, the
things we could not say
We thought we could change this world
with words like “love” and “freedom”
We were part of the lonely crowd
Inside the Sad CafeOh, expecting to fly,
we would meet on that beautiful shore in the sweet by and bySome of their dreams came true,
some just passed away
And some of them stayed behind
inside the Sad Cafe. The clouds rolled in and hid that shore
Now that Glory Train, it don’t stop here no more
Now I look at the years gone by,
and wonder at the powers that be.
I don’t know why fortune smiles on some
and let’s the rest go freeMaybe the time has drawn the faces I recall
But things in this life change very slowly,
if they ever change at all
no use in asking why,
it just turned out that way
So meet me at midnight baby
inside the Sad Cafe.
Why don’t you meet me at midnight, babe,
inside the Sad Cafe.

Hmmm! I think I know the point of origin for this post, though you transition into a memory that is not particularly sad, but one that bespeaks of a time and a place of discovery and joy. Your references to the Moon-Gate Coffee House remind me of two distinct but related places in time. The first I have only experienced through reading and that would be the days of the Vienna Circle built around your friend Mr. Wittgenstein, and the other is what you have created through the philosophical meet-ups in Long Grove and at Starbucks.
You mention the Heraclitus quote where he states that everything changes. It is a true statement and yet the opposite is true as well and little changes. The nature of man has remained constant over millennia and we have learned next to nothing from our past transgressions. The well known Bon Jovi quote is: “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”
And so, in the spirit of these blogs, I offer the lyrics:
The more things change the more they stay the same
The more things change the more they stay the same
Ah, is it just me or does anybody see
The new improved tomorrow isn’t what it used to be
Yesterday keeps comin’ ’round, it’s just reality
It’s the same damn song with a different melody
The market keeps on crashin’
Tattered jeans are back in fashion
‘stead of records, now it’s mp3s
I tell you one more time with feeling
Even though this world is reeling
You’re still you and I’m still me
I didn’t mean to cause a scene
But I guess it’s time to roll up our sleeves
The more things change the more they stay the same
The same sunrise, it’s just another day
If you hang in long enough they say you’re comin’ back
Just take a look, we’re living proof and baby that’s a fact
You know the more things change the more they stay the same
The more things change the more they stay the same
You’re either runnin’ round in circles or you’re runnin’ out of time
Everybody somewhere either 12, 3, 6 or 9
The times they are a-changin’
We’re here to turn the page
It’s the same old story but it’s told a different way
The more things change the more they stay the same
The same sunrise, it’s just another day
If you hang in long enough they say you’re comin’ back
Just take a look, we’re living proof and baby that’s a fact
You know the more things change the more they stay the same
Never and forever just keep comin’ back again
Don’t hold out for tomorrow or hold onto yesterday
The more things change the more they stay the same
The more things change the more they stay the same
The more things change the more they stay the same
Here comes a na na na na na na na
These days it’s the raise the roof instead of sha la la
Here come the rockers, the dancers and the remixed drum machine
This one is for the ceos and record companies
And if you’re waitin’ on a happy ending
We’re gonna hit the hook one more time
The more things change the more they stay the same
The more things change the more they stay the same
The more things change the more they stay the same
The more things change the more they stay the same
You know the more things change the more they stay the same
The same sunrise, it’s just another day
If you hang in long enough they say you’re comin’ back
Just take a look, we’re living proof and baby that’s a fact
You know the more things change the more they stay the same
Never and forever just keep comin’ back again
Don’t hold out for tomorrow or hold onto yesterday
The more things change the more they stay the same
Whoa oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
I like Jon Bon Jovi’s lyrics. Nothing beats a good lyric line to make a point, with visceral impact. My memory of Fugetsudo is sad because I and everyone else wish that experiences of value might endure longer than they do. I think that is why we have so many sad songs. Like you I assume that human nature does not change, but that is very difficult to tell. Human nature is so context dependent. I’d like to think that we are in general less cruel than our Roman ancestors. Many of us do not need to express cruelty to survive……
