A Drifter Needing Rescue
The uncomfortable, suffocating heat and humidity have moved on. Today is bright with sunlight, and agreeably mild. “So it goes” with the weather and with life. It pays to pay attention to what is on the menu, to the “soup of the day” or to the Duck à l’Orange if it happens as the special of the day.
On occasion it seems that material to be commented upon finds me, as if fate presents it’s menu at a moment prior to opening the laptop, to activate the luminescent screen. In the course of the short drive today this song came up on the radio. I have featured it before.
The movement of the melody, the rising harmonies of the guitars, keyboards and the lyrics “knock me out” on every occasion to listen. The anthem is hymn-like, tragedy and praise to the sacrifice inscribed within life itself. Each of us experiences longing, loss and companionship in his/her own way, uniquely, but at the same time common to all of us.
What if the varieties of companionship, casual acquaintance, friendship, lover, spouse, etc. are none other than “loves sweet charity”? Could we already possess what we are looking for? We drifters, gypsies…
Here is the lyric for your examination. Enjoy a video of the Brit band Whitesnake performing their 1987 hit tune, Here I Go Again.
Here I Go Again
By Whitesnake
I don’t know where I’m going
But I sure know where I’ve been
Hanging on the promises in songs of yesterday
And I’ve made up my mind
I ain’t wasting no more time
Here I go again, here I go again
Though I keep searching for an answer
I never seem to find what I’m looking for
Oh, Lord, I pray you give me strength to carry on
‘Cause I know what it means
To walk along the lonely street of dreams
Here I go again on my own
Going down the only road I’ve ever known
Like a drifter, I was born to walk alone
And I’ve made up my mind
I ain’t wasting no more time
I’m just another heart in need of rescue
Waiting on love’s sweet charity
And I’m gonna hold on for the rest of my days
‘Cause I know what it means
To walk along the lonely street of dreams
And here I go again on my own
Going down the only road I’ve ever known
Like a drifter, I was born to walk alone
And I’ve made up my mind
I ain’t wasting no more time
But here I go again
Here I go again
Here I go again
Here I go
(repeat chorus)
