About Music
In the course of a brief phone conversation yesterday with a friend, music was mentioned. What does music affect for us, when we listen, when we are enthralled with rhythm, rhyme, harmony, and the lyric of a human voice? Could it be we are addressed by a god that we cannot name, one without a name, that merits our unconditional allegiance?
Transported by music, I “know” that I am more than animal, and you too, my friend!
What is it
that my whole body
really expects of music?
I believe, its own ease:
as if all animal functions should be quickened
by easy, bold, exuberant, self-assured rhythms;
as if iron, leaden life should be gilded by good golden and tender harmonies.
My melancholy wants to rest
in the hiding places and abysses of perfection:
that is why I
need music.

This song was used not that many posts ago, but I think that it fits here. Enjoy!
