As Important As The Greatest Event…
What I do
or do not do now
is as important for everything that is yet to come
as is the greatest event of the past:
in this tremendous perspective of effectiveness
all actions appear equally great and small.

I shared these lines with a few friends, in an emailed postscript to a workshop which we shared. The workshop was an exercise in philosophy of language. A collection of personal descriptors, words charged with positive and negative judgment were considered, Words in Red. Language is critical to the formation of self confidence and agency or of a deficit of self-regard.
The four hours spent getting acquainted, especially stories of past experiences was a rich, useful exercise for me. Self formation is never complete, — honest, generous words spoken and heard are primary building materials, “every word is a completed deed.” A sharp distinction ought not be made between words and deeds.
Nothing is superfluous, excess, nothing is throwaway. Every word and every deed is both cause and effect, contributing to the future. Even not doing, what I manage not saying, prompted by over-weening ego matters too.
Everything matters. Even silence matters.

I love this piece. The thought that each word, each action, even each thought creates a future…and each is important for the future that emerges. Thanks.
