Day’s End
Soon the light will begin to fade. I’d rather have my say in the morning before the usual responsibilities, the newscasts on NPR, etc. clutter my mind. I prefer a clean sheet to draw my word-pictures for the day. Today was different. It was necessary to be in traffic on I94 at rush hour, and then to begin serving early morning customers. I don’t mind the work. I know the people that I work for. I am paid fairly. So the work-for-a-living came first today. Also, I couldn’t help but think about an insurance audit that apparently is not going well. As I worked I thought more about the audit situation, and came to some peace about the matter.
A friend remarked about my advocacy of Rock N Roll as a source of perspective, and existential solicitude in this time of political and social upheaval. Granted we have an unstable President, and the government is paralyzed. Nothing of substance will be done with the country awash in guns, and murder of children increases in regularity.
I offer this tune by REO Speedwagon as a proposal that captures the two poles of our human experience. The two poles are that of faithfulness, and that of betrayal. It is just that simple. Is one to betray oneself, betray another human, or a whole group of humans, or the earth itself, –for thirty pieces of silver? What is my price? Ought I to allow circumstances to develop, reach a point, then I’ll collect my price? Of course not. Yet how often do we awaken after we are quite far down that road? A choice is already made. And there is no discretion over the consequences.
Anyway here is the tune. This is not just a love song. It’s more, much more.
