Farmer’s Market
The Farmer’s Market does not disappoint. A weekly event, which replicates the open air commerce of many generations, universal, on every continent, – that is the Farmer’s Market. The buying and selling is integrated with the producer, with the production of many types of goods, not limited to the produce which comes from sun, soil, and water. Agreeable with regard to an open air market is the opportunity, and sometimes the expectation that words, minimally pleasant greetings will be exchanged between the customer and the seller. Commerce with a human face.
The contrast with supply chain, corporate, internet based commerce is palpable. Efficient, sterile, streamlined in order to make available products at the lowest cost, with the greatest possible margin of profit. Not so with the Market. “What you see is what you get” generally speaking. Even though the asking price may be more than you’d otherwise pay for vegetables, you are participating to support another family that is dedicated, doing their best to raise a crop, or bake bread, or prepare a tasty taco for your “on the spot” breakfast… Here every encounter is humanizing, with potential to be surprising, and satisfying.
I purchased this sketch-watercolor from Myra who told me the story of her creation of this image of the “mushroom woman”. The image is intricate, showing the rush of life, a statement about nature. The female dimension is palpable: the center point of the piece is a silhouette of a human female. The power of the female is subtle, and (I doubt if I would have noticed if the artist had not pointed out) the female’s hand is holding a semi-automatic handgun. Nature can be sublime, evoking awe, causing us to be speechless, at a loss for words. Concurrently nature, lethal, – life giving and deadly, one and the same.
Enjoy the work of Myra Miller the Artist/Designer whose work I really liked!
Also for your enjoyment photos of a tiger lily, and an orange day lily.
