Feynman
I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without any purpose, which is the way it really is as far as I can tell. It doesn’t frighten me.
–Richard Feynman
quoted from The Life and Science of Richard Feynman by James Gleick
Tonight the philosophy discussion will treat the thought of Richard Feynman. This quotation received from a friend intrigues me. The words appeal to the child in me. As a child feeling lost was a familiar feeling. The child in me, even now as a 68 year old adult, keeps me in touch with the unknowing, that “lost in mystery” sense of my life. That the universe does not disclose any purpose is an invitation, an opportunity. Provision of purpose is my job, an obligation which I accept, along with my colleagues.
I eagerly anticipate the discussion of the evening.
