Frigid Fire
I participated in a discussion of Fascism yesterday. We reflected upon an 1932 essay written by Benito Mussolini, The Doctrine of Fascism.
Fascism is a political religion. Elements are: an underclass of citizens with a grievance about unjust social arrangements they believe causes them unsatisfactory lives, an autocratic politician with a savior delusion, and a corps of thug-ish sycophants inspired by murder, by destroying the lives of designated victims.
Promotional add-ons appeal to “reason”, to sell the Fascist methods. Two of these are a notion of sacrifice for the greater good which is a nod to traditional Christianity and declaring “the State” is the supreme cause, one that is worth living and dying for.
I hope this sounds familiar.
Rob Brezsny who I respect as a writer describes the current situation this way:
And now the fire has come.
What’s burning right now:
• our faith in institutions we thought were permanent
• our certainties about unending progress
• our stories about who we are as a nation
• our assumptions that democracy was self-sustaining
• our belief that the truth would automatically prevail over liesAnd no other event better symbolizes the cluster-fuck of hideous atrocities than the barbaric, execution-style murder of Renee Nicole Good, mother of three, by a masked thug hired by ICE.
One other abomination rivals that villainy: the fact that the murderer has collected well over a million dollars through fund-raising campaigns in his behalf.
