History and Freedom
Exile. That is what I feel this morning. Tuesday after the Labor Day weekend, and already there is a autumn chill in the air. Too soon, too early to anticipate the frost. I feel wrecked by life, by the chain of events that have led me, led us to this point. We have a narcissist in the White House. N Korea threatens nuclear war. Eight hundred thousand children and young adults face deportation from the United States. To speak personally, physical and mental powers diminish with age, as in the hourglass bulb measuring times passage, a few grains are left. At least that is how I feel.
We are the result of history, more than we know—we think we are free from it. Nietzsche said, If you believe in freedom, you are stupid, but if you don’t feel freedom, you’re doomed. You function in relation to the entire moral code that is based on responsibility and, therefore, freedom of choice.
