In The Beat
This morning I felt out-of-sorts when I began my day. My sense of life was dissonant with my perception of “reality,” the goings-on around me. I know that the daily news reporting has a lot to do with my funk. The president elect has yet to be inaugurated and the ether is filled with slander, hearsay, innuendo, insults, yelling. We have four long years ahead of us. God have mercy upon us all.
Last night I happened to catch Dobie Grey’s great tune Drift Away on the radio. This never fails to lift my spirits. I found a youtube video of the 1973 song illustrated with a slide show of departed fellow musicians. Dobie Grey passed in 2011. I’ve not personally met any depicted in the slide show. Seeing their fierce, kind eyes, the expression on their faces restored my sense of equilibrium as I listened to the lyric of Grey’s song. Just a few: Buddy Holly, Elvis, Keith Moon, Jimi Hendricks, Janis Joplin, Jim Croce, and Freddie Mercury. I know these are my people, those who play and sing the promise and the tragedy of their lives, of our lives. My life.
I listened to the back beat that runs from start to finish of Drift Away. The beat is the heartbeat of life, indeed of this earth and the generations which have risen, and will return to her.
Hope is in the beat.

I have learned that there are some who get the music, feel it, connect to it, sometimes even learn something from it, or if nothing else gain some kind of extra needed energy from how it connects to something in them. You are one of the lucky ones to have such receptors to music in you….
