Looking For That Sign
Tuesday morning and a cold rain is falling. Another day is before me. I have a short to-do list. Every item seems of life & death importance. And that,– is the problem. The daily news reports stories of the anti-Muslim travel ban affecting thousands of travelers world-wide, innocent, but denied entry to our country. Chaos grows, demonstrations approach a fourth day at airports and cities. It all feels like a battle space, a war zone. The details of life, seemingly are sucked into a vortex of confusion and struggle.
I cannot get the lyrics of Take It to the Limit out of my mind, a recurring reminder of many things past. The phrase “Take it to the limit, one more time” was stenciled above the tachometer in the cockpit of the race car years ago. That was a time when we were all young. Al the driver, eagerly was strapped into the drivers seat, and we happily pushed the car to the starting line for yet another pass. What 40 year old doesn’t love the adrenaline rush from a 4,000 hp nitro fuel car aimed for the timing lights?
Now I have many more years under my belt. I have a short to-do list for today. Every item feels important, a life or death matter. The words of that old love song echo in my mind, memories of what could have been. Never the less, life moves on, and I am still on the highway. The demand of the present is that I must, “take it to the limit” one more time today. There is prayer in my heart, a felt and unspoken plea to God, to the universe to “show me a sign”. Perhaps the sign will come in the form of a kind word, a gesture of friendship from someone I barely know, a glimpse of beauty in a work of art, or of meaning in a poem. Needed is something to hold on to, to keep us coming back for more,
Enjoy this great Eagles song:

And when you’re looking for your freedom
(Nobody seems to care)
And you can’t find the door
(Can’t find it anywhere)
When there’s nothing to believe in
Still you’re coming back, you’re running back
You’re coming back for moreSo put me on a highway
And show me a sign
And take it to the limit one more time
