Losing Oneself
Time lets “what is” fall on individuals.
The individual himself (herself) – in time – loses himself,
falls in a movement in which he dissolves
–is “communication,” not inevitably from one to another.
With this exception, that chance is the duration of the individual
in his (her) loss, time, which needs the individual, is essentially the death
of the individual (chance is an interference—or a series of interferences—
between death and the being).
However I approach it, I hold onto a feeling of dispersion
—of humiliating disorder. I write a book: I have to put my ideas in order.
I am diminished in my own eyes, sinking into the details of my task. In
discursive form, thought is always attention to one point at the expense
of other points, it tears a man away from himself, reduces him to a link
in the chain that he is.
–excerpt On Nietzsche, by Georges Bataille, trans, by Stuart Kendall, p. 136
Dispersion. The second law of thermodynamics. Entropy. There is a natural tendency of any isolated system to degenerate into a more disordered state.
But wait! This falling into disorder and dissolution is perhaps, communication between myself and another being(s). The communication, selves reciprocally losing themselves in another, is by no means inevitable, but merely possible.
Is that enough? For me it is enough. For you?
The song! What song may sustain us for today’s quotient of our journey? This, by Air Supply, Lost In Love.
Lost In Love
By Air Supply
I realize the best part of love is the thinnest slice
And it don’t count for much
But I’m not letting go
I believe there’s still much to believe in
So lift your eyes if you feel you can
Reach for a star and I’ll show you a plan
I figured it out
What I needed was someone to show me
You know you can’t fool me
I’ve been lovin’ you too long
It started so easy
You want to carry on (Carry on)
Lost in love and I don’t know much
Was I thinkin’ aloud and fell out of touch?
But I’m back on my feet
And eager to be what you wanted
So lift your eyes if you feel you can
Reach for a star and I’ll show you a plan
I figured it out
What I needed was someone to show me
You know you can’t fool me
I’ve been lovin’ you too long
It started so easy
You want to carry on (Carry on)
Lost in love and I don’t know much
Was I thinkin’ aloud and fell out of touch?
But I’m back on my feet
And eager to be what you wanted
You know you can’t fool me
I’ve been lovin’ you too long
It started so easy
You want to carry on (Carry on)
Lost in love and I don’t know much
Was I thinkin’ aloud and fell out of touch?
But I’m back on my feet
And eager to be what you wanted
Now I’m lost, lost in love, lost in love, lost in love
Now I’m lost, I’m lost in love, I’m lost in love, lost in love
