Loss
Friday morning at Baptist Health here in Louisville. I didn’t expect to be here at this time. Yesterday I received word that our daughter lost the baby that was due in another month. The news came as a shock, a lightning strike on a clear day. The pregnancy had proceeded normally with regular checkups. The baby was named some weeks ago and we were all excited to welcome baby Kai into the world. Then at the last checkup visit yesterday morning, the Doctor observed that baby Kai was no longer moving and there was no pulse.
Most of the family are here this morning at our daughters bedside. She and her partner are strong women. There is nothing to be done but shed tears. A daughter of my daughter who was loved before she was born has passed on. We must let her go.
So, I conclude this post remembering my mother. Before I was born she suffered the loss of her first husband, and her brother. Both died in the same car accident during the time of World War II. Mom was eighteen or nineteen. She survived the loss.
Life is about loss. One must find enough love in the midst of the pain to let something or someone go.
Here is a song about loss. It reminds me of an old Negro spiritual. We sing to manage the pain. Grief is beyond words, demanding music.
