Mothers, Guardians of the Galaxy
As a younger man I thought that Mother’s Day was a perfunctory holiday. It seemed a formal obligation with minimalist, relatively unstructured requirement to express appreciation to one’s mom, and to motherhood in general. As the years have passed, Mother’s day as grown in my estimation. Now I view it as a sacred time, a day when the usual Sunday activities of recreation are suspended. The normal flow of time is interrupted for contemplation of the critical importance of mothering. When young and innocent are we not totally dependent upon the solicitude, the gracious care of our mother? By good timing, chance, nature offered the lesson. I observed a mother fox grooming a cub in our backyard. Both were at ease, safe, satisfied to be together in the spring sunlight. She preened the fur of the young fox that lay at her feet stretched out in the warmth.
Not all mothers are good mothers, worthy of recognition. Some suffer from a deficit of mothering, and do no know how to be a mother. My instinct tells me that attentiveness to mothering is one social glue that binds society together, generation to generation.
On a related topic, I went to the movies on Saturday evening,–perhaps as a pre-mother’s day warm up. The movie was Guardians of the Galaxy 2. It was a rollicking tale of companionship and struggle against a overwhelming dark force. Its mainly an adult tale. Kurt Russell delightfully plays God. I was reminded of Nietzsche’s assertion that God is beyond the human categories of good and evil. What this may mean is the central plot line of the story. What it means to form and nurture community is explored in the ebb and flow of the relationships between the main characters. Family and community development is not for the faint of heart. If you choose to see this one the clever one-liners spoken by the raccoon character Rocket, will keep you smiling.
There are two kinds of beings in the universe, those who dance, and those who do not.
The Galaxy is not going to save itself.

There is also a cool retro dimension to the movie. A number of great tunes from the heyday of Rock n Roll are featured to enhance the story telling. Enjoy this majestic song from Sam Cook.
