Only Once
Yesterday I attended a birthday party for our grandson. It was his forth birthday. He has a good grasp of language now and is able to express his opinions, his desires quite well. The excitement on his face was unmistakable. He had reason to anticipate this special occasion long before the guest arrived at his house. On the wall of the dining room was a attractive sign chosen by mom that announced that today was his birthday. A large helium balloon in the shape of the number “4” floated above the dining room table.
The guests in attendance were family members and good friends, who are considered as family. The conversations continued from late in the afternoon until early evening. Seeing people that I do not see enough of, was the best part of the gathering for me. There were snacks, pizza, and finally the official ceremony at the table with the cake and candles. Everyone joined in the happy birthday song, and four flaming candles were extinguished. Then the birthday gift opening part of the event commenced. Our grandson would say that was his favorite part of the time.
Each present was opened and examined quickly, and then a rush to open the next gift, as he was assisted by mom surrounded by a large circle of delighted adults.
Do you remember how it felt when you received your first bicycle? Sadly I do not remember. It was a wonderful experience though. I know because I have seen the wonder on my grandson’s face.
