Plague Journal, A Nice Day To Start Again
I awoke at 5:50AM a few minutes before the alarm would have aroused me from slumber. In the darkness my first thoughts were that Friday is a nice day, I have a fine vantage point to observe the demise of our democracy, our civil society. Two days in the aftermath of a failed coup, instigated by our deranged President, he remains in office; one hundred and forty seven Republican members of the House of Representatives voted to overturn the election results in the early Thursday morning hours after the assault on the Capital. The mob that battered down the doors to gain entry to the floor of congress were not met with a hail of bullets. In most nations these individuals would now be in custody charged with sedition, of acting to overthrow the government. Friday is a nice day to start again don’t you think? Starting again, that leap into the void is apparently what we want to do.
Our grandson presented us with a Lego model which he had fashioned. This sparked a memory for me, as a kid of being so proud of model airplanes which I built. In my imagination I yet smell the Testors glue applied to styrene plastic. The green Lego rhino was shown with much pride, and a growing sense of self. Truly the delights of a child are signs of the natality of the world, the new emerges in splendor all about us.
And what about a song, a lyric, and melody to get us through? This one does the job for me. White Wedding by Billy Idol. Weddings are quintessential beginnings, two lives, two different histories brought together with the expectation that the work of love will achieve mutual accommodation to create a family. Every beginning is a throw of the dice, a leap-of-faith into empty space. Only time will tell….
What have we done !?
Idol, on an episode of VH1 Storytellers, explained that his sister’s wedding simply gave him the idea for the song. Like many of Idol’s compositions, he started with the title and wrote the song from there.
A key element to this song is the quick little guitar riff that starts it. Idol and his guitarist, Steve Stevens, liked to have a distinctive guitar part to open the songs – they thought of it like a flag harkening its arrival. — Wikipedia

Hey little sister what have you done?
Hey little sister who’s the only one?

Hey little sister who’s the one you want?
Hey little sister shot gun!
It’s a nice day to start again.
It’s a nice day for a white wedding.
It’s a nice day to start again.
Hey little sister who is it you’re with?
Hey little sister what’s your vice and wish?
Hey little sister shot gun (oh yeah)
Hey little sister who’s your superman?
Hey little sister shot gun!
It’s a nice day to start again (come on)
It’s a nice day for a white wedding
It’s a nice day to start again.
(Pick it up)
Take me back home
Hey little sister what have you done?
Hey little sister who’s the only one?
I’ve been away for so long (so long)

I let you go for so long
It’s a nice day to start again (come on)
It’s a nice day for a white wedding
It’s a nice day to start again.
There is nothin’ fair in this world
There is nothin’ safe in this world
And there’s nothin’ sure in this world
And there’s nothin’ pure in this world
Look for something left in this world
Start again
Come on
It’s a nice day for a white wedding
It’s a nice day to start again.
It’s a nice day to start again.
It’s a nice day to start again
