Plague Journal, Another Night of Tear Gas, Rubber Bullets
The rioting continues, despite the efforts of governors to use police and national guard to protect property, and to minimize the use of force against those who are protesting systemic racism, and particularly the disproportionate killing of black people by police.
At the national level, the President rages like a mad emperor. Subsequent to the murder of a black man in Minneapolis, George Floyd, and persistent racism, brought to a head by the covid-19 epidemic, why would a sane leader contrive a photo op in front of a church, with a Bible held high, as a call to arms?
I am struck dumb, speechless by
these events. Under the best of circumstances, with excellent leadership, it would be very difficult, taking several generations of effort to reduce the bias against Black citizens in our country. Nevertheless, this is what we must do; this is our work; our ticket of admission to the community of humane, democratic societies.
