Plague Journal, Gett’n Past The Pain
It is Monday morning, a gray overcast sky. I do not want to write about politics, about the resurgence of the covid virus, or about the heatwave scorching the West. Can I write a few lines about a song, about music that communicates more than the composers, the performers intended, or could know? Rock music has been a lifeline for the entirety of my adult life, a therapeutic respite from the discipline, from the focus demanded by maintaining a living in the capitalist jungle. If that sounds Darwinian, — it is. Eat or be eaten.
Love Will Find A Way is a song released by the California rock band Pablo Cruise in May of 1978. The tune elevates my mind, recharges my sense of connection with the world of living things, and with my fellow humans. There is no question that we fail often. With good intentions, it is impossible to appreciate the myriad cause and effect links that are affected by our actions. And there are times when our intention is admittedly self centered, avaricious, bent on maximizing our advantage, — “winner take all.” Too often even in retrospect we feel no shame, or even pain for the damage done.
Always the ultimate challenge is getting past the pain of our own f__k up. We must absorb the pain of “what we have done” in order to begin again. Grief for the damage done, is the pivot point for a more inclusive love of the relationship between myself (ourselves) and the other. Equal in importance is our relationship with the land, the sky, with the rivers and lakes, and with non-human living things.
Granted, we’ve over developed and engineered, causing climate change. We’ve reversed the course of rivers, built cities on marshland, engineered great dams and excavated reservoirs, to grow Kentucky Bluegrass lawns in the Nevada desert. It is time to see ourselves in the mirror. We are the homo sapiens that Sophocles, that Shakespeare, that Andrew Lord Webber have written about, — the apex predator/creator with potential for great devastation and great works of beauty.
It is time to begin again. Love Will Find A Way. It is that simple and that difficult.
This video clip was recorded in 2010.
Love Will Find A Way
By Pablo Cruise
Someone, someone’s done you wrong
You thought that
Your love was strong
Now you’re feeling like
Such such a fool, poor you
You’re thinking
Maybe if you said goodbye
You’ll understand the reason why
The love you had felt so cool
Oh, but it’s all right (all right)
Once you get past the pain
(Past the pain)
You’ll learn to find your love again
So keep your heart open
‘Cause love will find a way
Sometimes we all
Feel a need to change
Our love we have to rearrange
And move on to something new
Yes, you do
Your dreams feel like
They’re falling apart
You need to find a brand new start
But you’re almost afraid
To be true to yourself
Whoa, but it’s all right (all right)
Once you get past the pain
(Past the pain)
You’ll learn to find your love again
(Find your love again)
So keep your heart open
‘Cause love will find a way
Love will find a way
Love will find a way
Yeah, so now don’t
Don’t be afraid of yourself
Just move on to something else
And let your love shine through again
Yes, ’cause it’s all right (all right)
Once you get past the pain
(Past the pain)
You’ll learn to find your love again
(Find your love again)
So keep your heart open
‘Cause love will find a way
It’s all right (all right)
Once you get past the pain
(Past the pain)
You’ll learn to find your love again
(Find your love again)
So keep your heart open
‘Cause love will find a way, oh
Yes, it’s all right (all right)
Don’t be afraid
‘Cause it’s all right (all right)
Yes, it’s all right (all right)
Keep your heart open
‘Cause love will find a way
