Plague Journal, Interlude
An interlude is a time for reflection, a brief “time out” to recall what has been written in the playbook, and to conceive a plan of attack. Momentarily it will be “game on.” The wonderful words said at the inauguration ritual will be past — difficult, improvisational work will begin.
One difficulty will be Congress. The Biden administration has a slim majority in the House, and a bare majority in the Senate with Vice President Harris the deciding vote. Members of Congress who supported the Trump agenda, especially the 139 House members, and 8 GOP Senators who voted against accrediting the Electoral College votes received from the states, after the Capital had been sacked,– cannot flip a switch to remove a mind-set, excise a world view. Change of mind will be difficult, taking time, — if possible at all. Patience and strength are called for.
Finally, we ought to never forget what the Republican party is capable of, if Conservatives put forward another imperious leader, a person untrustworthy, who uses at will, words as weapons. A shattered glass pane in the Capital building is mute testimony that on January 6th, a mob ransacked the precincts of Congress with intent to harm, to murder Representatives of the people doing their job.
SELF-ASSURANCE IS NOT ARROGANCE, NOR IS HUMILITY, FEAR. — Alan Lykins. Words to remember, to light the way forward.
