Plague Journal, Watching Everything Burn
Saturday! Here I am at my desk with conflicting emotions of gratitude (I made it to the weekend) and trepidation. Challenges remain ahead. I am sad, feel empathy for those in northern California who are in the vise of climate warming. They watch as the land around them is scorched by wildfires. How awful to see vineyards, homes reduced to ashes in minutes by wind driven fire. According to a Friday article in the San Francisco Chronicle 694,000 acres have burned in Northern and Central California, that’s 1,085 square miles. 60,000 people have been forced to evacuate. Fire fighting resources are stretched thin, and are breaking. At least five people have been killed.
The Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California’s oldest is gone. The fate of the grand old trees is not yet known.
I am not a news junkie, but I have yet to hear a word of consolation, any effort of leadership from the White House, directed toward our fellow citizens in California. I am angry and numb with disappointment.
I managed to register online to vote in the November 3rd election. I requested a vote by mail ballot. My first attempt to register online was thwarted by my computer repeatedly timing out, about three quarters through the process. I assume the servers on the other end were maxed out. I am prompted to consider the consequences for others who do not have a up-to-date computer, or less bandwidth than I? What are the prospects that vote-by-mail will successfully be executed by them?
Read in my iphone news feed this morning, — Postmaster General DeJoy said that 671 sorting machines taken out of service, would not be restored in time for the election.
I visited the Biden-Harriss campaign site intending to purchase a Biden-Harris 2020 yard sign. The sign cost was in the neighborhood of $20.00, which entailed a contribution to the campaign. That is understandable. Then I read the delivery fee was to be $9.00. My “tilt” alarm, such as when you lift the corner of a pinball machine, began to sound in my head.
Off to the Amazon site… Purchased the same sign for $11.00. No additional fee for delivery to Prime members. I plan to proudly display the sign and vote Biden-Harris come November 3rd.
