Raining
Did not post yesterday since most of the day was spent on I-65 traveling from Chicago to Louisville. We departed in a gentle rain which surely will bring down the few remaining leaves from the trees in the neighborhood. The plus side of the 6 hour drive was the brisk movement of traffic around Chicago by the end of Lake Michigan and into Indiana. The negative were the striations of dark clouds across the horizon, pouring rain, hanging so low as to touch the soaked stubble of bare fields on either side of I-65. The hours passed, and we drove through through several extended assaults of wind and torrents of rain. I could see flooding on either side of the road.
My mind wandered and I thought of the storm that lashes our country, –the dismembering of institutions such as the EPA, the Department of Education and the State Department. Naturally the supporters of the imperious individual occupying the White House have their ideological rationalization for the deconstruction of these essential institutions.
Thinking and driving, I looked over the acres of fields recently harvested by giant combines. I know those vast expanses of engineered mono-culture crops could not be cultivated and harvested by high tech GPS enabled machines unless the earth is prepared and poisoned by glyphosate and dicambia. The herbicides are now showing up in our food.
Driving through the storm I listened to a CD of a Springsteen concert in New York City. I’ve listened to this CD many times. I began to cry.
It’s raining inside and outside.

Oh oh this train, I’m riding this train
Don’t you wanna ride
(This train)
Oh get on, get on (this train)Grab your ticket and your suitcase
Thunder’s rolling down the tracks
You don’t know where you’re goin’ now
But you know you won’t be back
Darlin’ if you’re weary
Lay your head upon my chest
We’ll take what we can carry
And we’ll leave the restBig wheels rolling through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreamsI will provide for you
And I’ll stand by your side
You’ll need a good companion
For this part of the ride
Leave behind your sorrows
Let this day be the last
Tomorrow there’ll be sunshine
And all this darkness pastBig wheels roll through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreamsThis train…
