Recrudescence
This morning I turned on NPR. Still dark, it was early. Barely awake, I tuned to the beginning of an interview with one of Alabama’s Congressional Representatives. This is the followup of the Presidents visit to McAllen Texas yesterday. I could not listen to the interview with the man from Alabama. The sound of his voice left me chilled so I switched the station to WXRT. The rock song Crazy On You by Heart, was playing. That was a lot easier to take.
The old Confederacy is stirring, rising from the grave. The President wants what he wants and is willing to go to any lengths to get it. This is not hard for him. This is his customary behavior. Why do others support him? Some support him because they are racists. They do not approve of people of color in this country, any of them. This includes citizens and especially non-citizens. They live without compassion.
Racism is a metastatic projection of self-hatred.
Others support him because they fear him. Some of them are quite close to him in their profession. He is their boss. They recognize if they do not play their part in this drama, they will lose their jobs, and worse, their reputation. It is quite easy to lose ones reputation nowadays with social media, to be branded as disloyal. A steely character is required to do and say what is right, when one’s livelihood is on the line.
So 800,000 or so federal workers go without pay, hostages to the Presidents insistence that congress give him five billion dollars plus, — to build a wall. The President insists –so our neighbors can be paid, and to alleviate a crisis which the President himself sustains.
If there is an afterlife, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forest surely is smiling.
