Royal Wedding
I watched again on video the wedding between Britain’s Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. I wish the couple well. There are few things more fraught with risk than marriage. There are many inevitable unknowns, like the under water volume of the iceberg that looks so beautiful and benign on the surface. Good luck to them.
I was moved by the rendition of Ben E. Kings great hymn, Stand By Me which was performed by the Kingdom Choir directed by Karen Gibson. The piece was performed with heart, a spirit that went beyond professional competency. The thought occurred to me of the possibility that many of the black choir members were the descendants of slaves. If so, this performance in the presence of Lords and Ladies of the British Commonwealth, was conducted for relatives of the slave holding companies of the old empire.
Where did the soulful lyric come from? Who in this life has everything stripped away except the love of a friend or a spouse? Who prays that prayer: “Stand by me?”
