Scone Love
What ! I don’t believe it. The lyric is not scone love? Who doesn’t love a scone? A scone is just the right portion for a bite sized treat, lightly frosted crust, flaky texture, with just enough of a carb bump to fix low blood sugar.
For months and months I have privately enjoyed the mimetic, poetic link between the sound of scone and stone, in the song title, Stoned Love. I have kept the joke to myself, uncertain that anyone one else would get the sublimity of sound and concept between scone love and Stoned Love.
Anyway I do love the song and the song is more important than a scone, unless you need to address low blood sugar. The message of the lyric delivered by the Supremes is more critical now when we are in the throes of climate change, tremendous income disparity between the uber-wealthy and the common citizen, and the world-wide movement in politics away from liberal democracies toward Orwellian-authoritarian regimes.
The song is a public call to action.
Here it is:
Stoned Love
by The Supremes
Now I wanna tell ya of a great love, oh
It will light up
It will surely light up darkened worlds
If you just believeStoned love
Stoned love
Stoned love
Oh yeahA love for each other will bring fighting to an end
Forgiving one another, time after time doubt creeps in
But like the sun lights up the sky with a message from above
Oh yeah, I find no other greater symbol of loveYeah, don’t ya hear the wind blowing
Stoned love
Oh yeah, I tell ya I ain’t got no other
Stoned love
Oh yeahAnd life is so short, put the present time at hand
Oh yeah, and if you’re young at heart, rise up and take your stand
And to the man on whose shoulder the world must depend
I pray for peace and love, amenOh, can’t ya feel it
Stoned love
I tell ya I ain’t got no other
Stoned love
Oh yeah…
