Someone To Cling To
I am not a fan of television due my upbringing, and on account of other reasons flowing from that. I become impatient with thinly written dialog, and one dimensional cartoon-like characters. That’s how prime-time TV seems to me. Anyway after a day of effort earning a living, or in pursuit of something that I am passionate about — I lack the focus to follow rapid fire dialog, and warp speed scene changes that are served up on television. Perhaps no one else is offended by much of the advertising?
Enough complaining. You are not me, and perhaps your sense of television is more positive than mine.
I settled in to watch a serial drama, “Keeping Faith” that my wife found captivating. With a few minutes of viewing I understood why. The scene is present day Britain, and the main character is a female attorney, who has married a man with much of his interior life concealed. He leaves her and then returns. Faith’s descent into hell begins. The story has a redemptive dimension due to another male friend, a working class man of kind and open demeanor who cares for her. His name is Steve.
Anyway a song written for the series by Amy Wadge is entitled Steve’s Song. This is among the most beautiful and truthful love songs that I have heard. The songs speaks for itself. It is not possible for one human being to truly know another, let alone remove the burdens that come from the uncertainty of life, and the grief of regret from making mistakes. None of that is to be minimized. But to sustain and nurture an enduring relationship we can be a refuge in the storm, each for the other. The storms will come.
Enjoy! Lyrics follow the youtube video. The series in on Acorn TV.
Steve’s Song
By Amy Wadge
If I could hold you
If only for a second I could hold you
And let the fear rage on
Cling to each other in the eye of a storm
(Eye of a storm, eye of a storm)
If I could reach you
If only for a second I could reach you
And let it all go to hell
Hold on together till we go there as well
(Go there as well, go there as-)
‘Cause I know I could never
Be what you need
Never see what you see
Never be anything more than
Just somewhere to run to
When you’re scared to come to
I’ll be there, someone who knows
I won’t be anything more (I won’t be anything, I won’t be anything)
I won’t be anything more (I won’t be anything, I won’t be anything)
I won’t be anything more (I won’t be anything, I won’t be anything)
(I won’t be anything, I won’t be anything)
If I could know you
But only for one second really know you
I’d turn your scars into stars
And light up the sky, let them see who you are
‘Cause I know I could never
Be what you need
Never see what you see
Never be anything more than
Just somewhere to run to
When you’re scared to come to
I’ll be there, someone who knows
I won’t be anything more (I won’t be anything, I won’t be anything)
I won’t be anything more (I won’t be anything, I won’t be anything)
I won’t be anything more (I won’t be anything, I won’t be anything)
(I won’t be anything, I won’t be anything)
I won’t be anything more (I won’t be anything, I won’t be anything)
I won’t be anything more (I won’t be anything, I won’t be anything)
I won’t be anything more (I won’t be anything, I won’t be anything)
(I won’t be anything, I won’t be anything)
