To Sacrifice Half The Population
Memory, is what we call the minds re-membering of past experience, of what we did, saw or heard. Memory is not an exact replication of a past event. Memory like everything else the mind/body does, serves the survival of the organism. I will always remember the announcement of yesterday, the Supreme Court ruling eliminating constitutional protection for a woman to have the final say over her reproductive health. Females, one half of our population, no longer have the legal-right to be right or wrong in the matter of their bodies. So, decreed the Supreme Court. I will always remember yesterday. Yesterday was a turning point toward dis-union.
Yesterday a good friend and I enjoyed lunch at a Mundelein restaurant which we cherish. We were warmly greeted by a familiar waiter, and placed our order. As we are consumed our meal we discussed the hammer blow delivered to our society by a community of fear-filled countrymen, who are moved to mis-place blame for their circumstances. Women are the easy, the familiar target.
It is quite impossible to recognize our practice of capitalism, — the mandate to increase profit at every opportunity, excluding all other values, such as improved public education, employment at a fair wage for our own people, etc. sacrificed to the off-shoring of work as the direct cause of the decrepit condition of education, of infrastructure, and of the hollowing out of rural towns. Never mind all of that. Our conduct of the economy, capitalism, is cloaked in the red, white and blue of patriotism, and by association with evangelical religion.
Look, look over here at the gay “attack” on traditional marriage, at brown people fleeing here to “take our jobs”, — at the people of color! Above all something must be done about the runaway eroticism of women, and the “abortion mills,” etc. Thus we have witnessed a relentless push to select Justices for the court who are predicted to shut down Roe v. Wade.
For anyone outside of this maelstrom of paranoia is it easy to see how all of this feeds upon itself, a perfect storm. We lingered after eating to discuss approaches to persuade the uncommitted away from the empty promises of a strong-man leader. What are the odds of such a possibility? Fear and rage stoked at mass campaign rallies are so immediately effective.
It is surreal, freakish, illogical, unnerving, nightmarish to sacrifice one half of our population. That is exactly what many intend for female citizens.
When
is it reasonable to recognize a fellow citizen who might have been my neighbor, — is my enemy?
