Tom Petty 1950-2017
Tom Petty passed away over the weekend. He was one year younger than I.
There was vitality and nourishment for the spirit in those songs coming over the radio. I am sorry that I did not choose to see him live in concert when I had the opportunity.
I’ve always liked this song, “Runnin’ Down A Dream” in part, because it makes reference to Del Shannon’s great tune, “Runaway.” The truth of Petty’s lyric cannot be overstated. Life is a mystery, a singular experience to be explored. My life, your life is a dream that we can never run down. We live in hope, in anticipation of something good. Put the pedal down!
Here it is. Enjoy!
Rest in peace, Tom Petty.
“Runnin’ Down A Dream”
It was a beautiful day, the sun beat down
I had the radio on, I was drivin’
Trees flew by, me and Del were singin’ little Runaway
I was flyin’[Chorus:]
Yeah runnin’ down a dream
That never would come to me
Workin’ on a mystery, goin’ wherever it leads
Runnin’ down a dreamI felt so good like anything was possible
I hit cruise control and rubbed my eyes
The last three days the rain was un-stoppable
It was always cold, no sunshine[Chorus]
I rolled on as the sky grew dark
I put the pedal down to make some time
There’s something good waitin’ down this road
I’m pickin’ up whatever’s mine–written by Mike Campbell, Jeff Lynne, and Tom Petty
