Untergehen
Unteregehen
– going down, drowning, to perish
It’s Friday, early September with a hint the Fall soon to come. Things in time reocurr, over and over. Time is infinite, an open ended flow. But “things” in time are bounded by circumstance, arise and come to be and then dissipate.
You could become depressed if you think about that for a while.
Seated on the long bench by the back wall at Starbucks, with a number of my fellows. We have “time to spend” here. Strange phrase, “to spend time.” As if we have time. In truth time has us.
All of us peer at our computer screens. (Screens are new, a feature of our time, phosphorescent, serving an endless menu for the mind.) Some are students, some working remotely, and some retired.
It is almost 9:30 and the lawyerly appearing patrons are arriving, attired-for-court. The courthouse is imposing fortress-like, within view, a half block away. Court is where we do our best to settle things. Try as we will though, time is bound to undo it all, — pieces shuffled to random, over and over.
I like this song. The Bodeans were/are a great band. True Devotion by the BoDeans.
Do not be impressed by the mirror finished metal hood, the winged ornament, of this imposing motor coach. Do not be deceived by the paved roadway which seems to lead some where. The end is nowhere in particular. The record like time, will play over and over endlessly, the story in time…
True Devotion
By BoDeans
I never felt much pain
A mess of clouds came over me
The night it finally rained
In my hand there’s a silver heart
It says you belong to me
But it’s empty and used up
I’m sailing off to sea
Swallow an ocean
Going down, going down
With true devotion
It was so hard to see
Swear I lost you in the crowd
When you were right there with me
People scattering everywhere
Trying to make it back home
And I slipped and fell on my ass
I’m going down alone
And I don’t feel the waves
It doesn’t matter anyhow
I know I won’t be saved
Before you go to sleep tonight
Say a prayer for me, yeah
And all the other wasted souls
Drowning definitely
