Walworth County Fair
We attended the Walworth County Fair in Elkhorn Wisconsin yesterday. The first fair to be held on the grounds was in 1851. This is an old fashion farming community fair that continues to be supported by the entire community. I particularly enjoy the sense of history whenever we visit this place. The fair grounds comprise 99 acres of land. Agriculture is the dominant theme, and the animals are never far away. I observed several dairy cows being groomed for afternoon judging. The size of these gentle domestic animals was impressive to me.
We enjoy visiting the exhibit barns. One of our recent discussions of philosophical interest came to mind when visiting the exhibits of prize-winning produce. We spent some time Tuesday evening discussing the challenge of imagining how a full-grown plant could have come from a diminutive seed containing a tiny living kernel within it’s dead husk. The point came to mind as i viewed a pumpkin which won a blue ribbon for shear size. Can you imagine how this came to be from a thumb-nail sized pumpkin seed? According to the label this one weighs in at 585 pounds.
A featured event yesterday was the motorcycle flat track races to be held at the half mile oval race track. This was my opportunity to see something that I’d not seen before. We purchased our tickets and took our seats close to turn number one. There were several classes according to the size of the motors. The classes were 250cc to 450cc size engines, to the 750cc and over, Hooligan class. I think the Hooligan class means no limits, “run-what-you-brung.” What can I say, I love racing. The competition around the dirt track was primal. Occasionally I’d catch the aroma of methanol fuel, with the cloud of dust thrown into the wind as the machines reach speeds of 85 mph down the straight-a-way before hurtling sideways in a barely controlled skid into the sweeping curve. Courage and driving skill were more decisive than horsepower. It’s a balance between human, machine and physics. And no brakes to slow down.
You had to be there.
