When Inspired We Find
Like you I struggle to regain emotional equilibrium in the aftermath of the expressed will of the majority of my countrymen to cede the next four years of the Presidency to a con-man entertainer, to a life-long molester of females, to an insurrectionist. The White House, both houses of Congress, and the Supreme Court stand to be at the whim of this 21st century Elmer Gantry.
Clearly his qualifications for high office, are similar to those which obtain for many preachers, – individuals, “God-talk” adepts, willing to use the highest and holiest as a shiny wrapper to play upon the fears and desires and credulity of parishioners.
The means of becoming
the prophet and wonder-worker
of one’s age
are the same to-day
as in former times:
a) one must live apart,
b) with little knowledge,
c) some ideas,
d) and a great deal of presumption
—we then finish by believing that
mankind cannot do without us,
because
it is clear
that we can do without it.
When we are inspired
with this belief we find faith.
Finally, a piece of advice to him who needs it
(it was given to Wesley by Boehler, his spiritual teacher):
“Preach faith until you have it; then
you will preach it
because you have it!”
