Why?
What if
there is no why?
That is, no purpose and no reason for the way things are….. What if everything could have been different,
and thus markedly different in the present. There’s the endless pass time of counterfactual history. You know that game of speculation, a diversion of the imagination: What if the Battle of Salamis (480 B.C.) ended differently? What if Xerxes… Would I be writing this in Farsi? Would the world have a radically different texture for me, if the culture of the West were based on some other bedrock, than that of Greek reason, than that of the rational as the image of the real?
Nothing has to be the way things “happen” to be.
Is that a touch of vertigo that I am feeling? If there might have been any number, perhaps infinite possible past worlds, — and what of the future?
I heard this song by the Black Keys this morning. Is not a world, “the world” created out of, initialized by the imagination? Wild Child by The Black Keys.
