Hard Edge
Stand and fight !
or accede to the hard edges of this world: post industrial, connected, regimented — that we have made.
Those are the thoughts that rise to contemplation.
I found a port in the storm, somewhere that is familiar, where mind and body do not lapse into a pity party.
It has been a long time. I cannot remember the last time
that I was inconvenienced with a delay of departure due to equipment problem on an airliner.
I’m in the Phoenix airport waiting for my rescheduled flight to Fresno.
I’ll be late for my rendezvous with Tobin, but there is no help for it. Since my overnight bag flew to Fresno without me…… I’ll follow it, and our cross country drive will commence, albeit later than we had planned.
The pilot said that a generator on the Airbus 321 was showing low output, so the mechanics were called and all of us waited. I slept for most of the delay. The choice was simple, fly the plane load of people, knowing the weakness in the system or take the time for mechanics with expertise to trouble-shoot and correct the problem.
Three things:
I am glad that I live where safety is still among the highest priorities. That’s not necessarily the case everywhere.
I expect the engineering of our systems, the exquisite design of an airbus 32 1 to be reliable without exception. Silly me. Everything wears with use. There could be a microscopic crack in a metal part, growing……
I’ll take the disappointment of arriving belatedly to get the connecting flight, with my bag flying away to Fresno. Better to “man up” to remedy the loose ends, and notice, on balance — life is good.
Number three. Life is very good, because this Starbucks affords a welcoming atmosphere. I’ve spent many a hour in other locations where I am accustomed to collecting my thoughts. Thank you Howard Schultz for conceiving a company that affirms every day, the value of everybody.
