Things Holding Together
Can I, should I take a break in writing about the defense of Ukraine? Yes and no… Life is many things. Even in war there are interludes in assault, in the effort to destroy and kill. Especially in abject misery, in ravening terror — a pause is useful to recognize, to feel gratitude that one still lives. A respite however brief, “I am – I resist.” As long as one is alive there’s work to be done.
On a Tuesday morning, some thoughts on aesthetics.
Csilla Klenyánszki is a Hungarian born photographer, who now lives in Rotterdam. Her art is a metaphor for life. Life is delicate, a complex balance, order on the ragged edge of catastrophe.

Pillars of Home (2016 – 2017)
Pillars of home are ninety-eight balancing sculptures, made during my son’s nap, when our home – the living room, the kitchen, the bedroom or even the staircase – became a studio for no more than thirty minutes at a time.
The challenges of early motherhood are transformed into a game: the lack of time, the fragility of a new life, the weight of responsibility, our changing identities, tension. These are the elements. Care, strength, patience, devotion. These are the things holding it together.
Even in war, “these are the things holding [us] together.”
Care, strength, patience, devotion.
