Keepin’ The Faith

Keepin’ The Faith

Car show yesterday. An adventure in memory. Big shows seem to trigger introspection. I think about the individuals in the prime of life, that solved mechanical conundrums, understanding more deeply the principles of physics, to design, to construct a more functional, and a more beautiful vehicle. I do not believe that beauty can be separated from function. Often the more functional, the more beautiful. I suppose the sensation of elegance is a clue to the quotient of design that delights and aids us “getting done” whatever constraints our circumstances demand. Function and beauty seem tied to our species, our rootedness in the earth, or so it seems to me.

In 1963 American muscle cars were approaching the height of popularity. The big three American automakers, Ford, Chrysler, GM understood that winning on Sunday (at the race track) resulted in robust dealer sales on Monday.  The Super Stock class ignited palpable excitement, fans usually standing to watch the factory sponsored cars compete.

Len Grimsley was kind enough to relate some stories about his families 1963 Super Stock Plymouth Belvedere.  I liked the tag line, Keepin’ The Faith on the side of the car. I think it necessary that we respect our heritage, the work and passion of past generations, to honor the hours, months, and years of hands- on-problem solving which this car represents.

I took a few photos.  An 8 second quarter mile remains breathtakingly fast, for a full bodied automobile.  A max wedge motor with two four barrel carburetors transmitted horsepower to the Chrysler torqueflite transmission.  A gear-head will relate to the jargon.  Viewing this car performing a wheels-up launch from the starting line surely was unforgettable! This car is recognized as the quickest Nostalga Super Stock with 8.484 quarter mile elapsed time, at 157.81 mph in the timing lights…

It simply feels good when I am reminded the past sustains us in the present, inspires us for the journey ahead!
