Altar Call
We are taking a few days, a “time out” from the routine, only and hour and a half drive to Coloma, Michigan. Somehow being on the other side of Lake Michigan sufficiently rotates the axis of reality for the family, – change of rhythm, staying together in the big lake house, just a short walk from the beach. Albeit short – the walk evokes a feeling of caution. A steep stairway descends a ravine surrounded by a Jurassic Park-like forest.
A further note: sunset occurs on the far side of the lake here!
We’ve made a ritual as it happens, on our last evening here the extended family is on the beach to view the sun setting over the big lake. To give undivided attention to a sunset, can be a deeply moving thing. Similar to an altar-call at the conclusion of a summer’s revival sermon! But better, because the setting sun is just you and nature, of which you have always been a part.
Sometimes its as if you can hear your name called.
