I Look Inside Myself
Happened to hear this song on the radio. Like a moth to a flame, the lyric and tune are mesmerizing. I am not the only one so affected. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards in 1966, the song became iconic of deeply rooted resistance to the Vietnam War. Fifty one years later we are roiled globally by anti-democratic Nativist insurgencies which degrade and seek to eliminate reason, conservation of the environment, affordable health care, and regulation of robber-baron Capitalism. Paint It Black comes again as a statement of resistance to the rising darkness. In 2004, it was ranked number 176 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. “I turn my head until my darkness goes” comes from James Joyce’s Ulysses, referring to the novel’s theme of a worldwide view of desperation and desolation.
