Sunday, Sunday Afternoon
At last the days are warming in the Mid-West. Its beginning to feel like spring. The buttercups are sprouting and a few are in bloom by the road.
After breakfast at Taste of Paris Cafe on Sunday morning we traveled to Wheaton to see our children and grand children. To visit together on a weekend is to rekindle the kinship and the affection that is entailed in the term, family. There is no substitute for physical proximity and the expression on another face.
Sunlight illuminated our daughters home. We admired the suitability of some new furniture. We also talked together about life, and encouraged one another about what needs to be done. What is necessary is not usually easy or painless.
After arriving at our son’s home we went for a walk to the nearby park The grand children were anxious to be outside. I remembered when I was a child, how happy I felt when winter passed, and the out-of-doors seemed to be calling in the song of mating birds. Like our three year old grand son I took pleasure in just being able to run unhindered over a wide expanse of playground. Lincoln, led the way on his bike as the five of us walked to the park which was several blocks from the house. At three he is able to ride a bike without adult support. His first bicycle is his ticket to freedom. That has not changed. I remember.
One of the features of the Park is a hill used for sledding. To a child that hill appears as a mountain. Parents and small children were climbing the hill and then running down. Lincoln handed his bicycle to me for safekeeping and off he went up the hill. Two year old sister Violet followed behind him. After a bit she turned and with the help of gravity came down the hill at a dead run. Dad was right behind just in case of a tumble.
What a Sunday afternoon!
