Jamal Khashoggi
While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
9 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”
“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10 The LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.
—Genesis Chapter 4
This is a very old story. It captures the essence of murder, why summary killing is considered a capital crime by all civilized societies. Several weeks ago a Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi ended his life in a spray of blood and bone chips while visiting the embassy of his country in Istanbul Turkey. There is no body. After days of investigation by Turkey our President says that it appears that he has been killed. One must note that the President said before the investigation got underway that nothing would come between the arms deal between the United States and Saudi Arabia.
“Am I my brother’s keeper?”
The answer indicates on which side of the line between barbarity and civilization one stands.
