Here Comes The Rain Again

Here Comes The Rain Again

You know, the rain.  The rain is coming.  Sunny days always give way to rain, sometimes lots of rain.   We delight in a sunny day, and who cannot celebrate!  Moreover who does not feel disappointment with report of a rainy weekend?  We had so many plans for the weekend.  Rain, and more rain interrupts those fantasies of the good times.

And so it is.

We are inclined to idealize the future, make plans for ourselves that assume ideal conditions.  There has to be a backstage and a supporting cast. All of that must be primed if we are to deliver our lines, and have the best brought out in ourselves.  We are the leading character, the protagonist in the great drama of our own magnificent life.

Imagine as we will, as we must, nothing ever matches up with the ideal.  There are always less than perfect conditions, lines delivered with less than total conviction, or a supporting role played in a manner that does not bring out the best in ourselves. …….

“Welcome to the human condition, to your membership in the common-lot-of-humanity,” is advice that we need to hear often from the master of ceremonies.  The production may not be “the best” that has ever played Broadway, but it can still be pretty damn good.  Good enough — to be glad that you purchased the expensive ticket, that you stayed to see how it would end, the grand denouement of the story.

This song is about that.   Lyrics, and backstory to the tune follows the you tube video.

Here Comes The Rain Again

Here comes the rain again
Falling on my head like a memory
Falling on my head like a new emotion
I want to walk in the open wind
I want to talk like lovers do
I want to dive into your ocean
Is it raining with you

So baby talk to me
Like lovers do
Walk with me
Like lovers do
Talk to me
Like lovers do

Here comes the rain again
Raining in my head like a tragedy
Tearing me apart like a new emotion
Oooooh
I want to breathe in the open wind
I want to kiss like lovers do
I want to dive into your ocean
Is it raining with you

So baby talk to me
Like lovers do

Here comes the rain again
Falling on my head like a memory
Falling on my head like a new emotion
(Here it comes again, here it comes again)
I want to walk in the open wind
I want to talk like lovers do
I want to dive into your ocean

Songwriters: Annie Lennox / David Allan Stewart

“Here Comes the Rain Again” is a 1983 song by British duo Eurythmics.  It became Eurythmics’ second Top 10 U.S. hit, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Stewart said: “‘Here Comes the Rain Again’ is kind of a perfect one where it has a mixture of things, because I’m playing a b-minor, but then I change it to put a b-natural (sic – the song is in A minor) in, and so it kind of feels like that minor is suspended, or major. So it’s kind of a weird course. And of course that starts the whole song, and the whole song was about that undecided thing, like here comes depression, or here comes that downward spiral. But then it goes, ‘so talk to me like lovers do.’ It’s the wandering in and out of melancholy, a dark beauty that sort of is like the rose that’s when it’s darkest unfolding and bloodred just before the garden, dies. And capturing that in kind of oblique statements and sentiments.”

Dave Stewart revealed that the lyrics to the song came into being after an argument between him and Lennox while they were doing some songwriting in New York City’s Columbus Hotel. The basic melody had already been written and Lennox looked out the window after their fight and noticed it was starting to rain. She announced, “Here comes the rain again.”

Thanks to Wikipedia for the backstory…..
